Usually the first post is used for publishing patches.

Other times, the last post is used. Which is to say that the post that was last at the time the release was made is the post where the release can be found.

I am confused by the misterious numbers e.g. 15473 or even more strange codes like h3b244a8f.

I suggest you read a book(s) about version control systems, in this case about subversion and mercurial.
