John Franklin’s GRF Kingdom

8 March 2023 Refurbish:

First of all, to celebrate women's day, maybe I should break the stereotype of OpenTTD players, such as "nerd boys". Any female players?

And, since my GRF experiment goes differently from my imagination, I should clear and write again.

Now it has:

(GPLv2, BaNaNaS) Dutch Trains for Mail Transporters - Refit passenger-only, high-speed MUs and coaches so that they can carry mail (and valuables), for those who are used to transporting passengers and mail together. A fork of Dutch Train Set 3.0.1-XL.

(GPLv2, BaNaNaS) DROP JF Fork - Adjust the max speeds and house availability of the roads in DROP (Dutch ROad Project) set. Provincial road and above do not allow houses build along them.

(GPLv2, BaNaNaS) JF Ratt Roads - A fork of Auz Ratt Roads. For more information, click here.

(GPLv2, BaNaNaS) JP+ MU Mail Cars - Override JP+ MU Cars (Passenger-only) so that they can carry mail (and valuables), again, for those who are used to transporting passengers and mail together. LOAD IT AFTER JP+ SET!!!

(GPLv2, BaNaNaS) JP+ Metro Mail Cars - Override JP+ Metro Cars (Passenger-only) so that they can carry mail (and valuables), again, for those who are used to transporting passengers and mail together. LOAD IT AFTER JP+ METRO!!!

Learning to make a NewGRF isn't too difficult. A relatively easy way to make NewGRFs is to use NML, a tutorial for which is here: https://www.tt-wiki.net/wiki/NMLTutorial

I like to use this image as a base. You'll probably do just fine just using the 32 pixel one at the top for most of your first sprites.

Here is a table about road types in Chinese Road Set.
Any advice?

Start coding! :)

As for graphics I'd suggest using them from other sets as placeholders if they're available under GPL license, if not then ask permission. That way you can at least get some idea if your code is working well and as you expect it to. Once it's done then you can go about designing your own or finding an artist.

Now I have found a roadtype GRF which is similar to my planning Chinese Road Set. It is called Unspooled.
The maximum speed of road with houses alongside is 85 km/h (asphalt road, and in the early phases it is 65-km/h stone road, which is a little too fast but still okay). Highway has no speed limits.
And Timberwolf's Roads set is more realistic and strict. Towns only build 30-mph roads and the maximum speed of road with houses alongside is only 40 mph.
Well, all good sets. So...
Chinese Road Set may be only an imagination.

I got an idea a week ago, and now the idea still exists, and has replaced some of the ideas I had in August.

Système International d'Unités!
SI Unit Road Speed Limit.png
If a region use m/s as speed unit...
(1.07 MiB) Not downloaded yet
Considering the fact that I have difficulty giving each of the hundreds of road vehicles a Chinese name (from Chinese tales, novels, .... But I have given some of them, such as Kuafu, Wukong for express coaches), and that there is no set using SI Units (the only one is RattRoads but few players choose "m/s"), I decided to change "Fictional Chinese Road Vehicle and Tram Set" to "SI-Unit Road Vehicle and Tram Set", and "Chinese Road Set" to "SI-Unit Road Set"!

It is also because I can adjust the speeds to both good numbers (the integer multiples of 2.5 m/s) and good actual speeds (Town - 15 m/s, Suburb - 25 m/s, Highway - 35 m/s)!

(Well, so many exclamation marks, but I am so glad to get this idea.)

Does any country seriously use m/s as speed unit for street traffic? I myself found no evidence. ?(

Well, this is only my fiction, but I have surprisingly found that this is suitable. 15-25-35 m/s can be transferred into 54-90-126 km/h.

Here is my fork of DROP, Dutch Road Project.

Notice that 90 km/h and above roads do not allow houses.

Another fork - Dutch Trains for Mail Transporters.

Every passenger-only MU and coach is now mail- and valuable- available.

Not all the road names fit on the infrastructure board is an old problem, the slider is missing. It's just that the developers obviously didn't count on it, and hopefully they'll fix it.
And as far as vehicles go, what about this set, it's nothing?

Again, for those who are used to transporting passengers and mail together - I have two new GRFs: JP+ MU Cars Mail Refit and JP+ Metro Cars Mail Refit (because of a collision of vehicle name, I could not code them together in one file; for shinkansen, I worked for hours but failed by unknown reason).

The GRF files are in the zipped source files.

LOAD THEM AFTER JP+ MU SET AND/OR JP+ METRO SET!!!

Why is there only a version for MU on bananas and not for metro?

Now there should be both.

JP+ Engines and Wagons Reliability and Cargo Aging Period Fix

You can use it to fix the low reliability of engines and increase the cargo aging period of wagons in JP+ Engines and Wagons. LOAD IT AFTER JP+ ENGINES AND WAGONS!!! John Franklin, 30 Apr 2023. Thanks to EmperorJake.

Update: it seems that it doesn't work...

Hi! The JP+MU Mail Refit grf isn't working when added to the GRF list mid-game.

Try a new game and see if that works.

It is generally advised to start a new game when adding/removing grfs as this can cause problems .

It should work... at least by loading it before start.
